What’s shakin, cocktail fans?

Welcome to the official 100th episode of The Modern Bar Cart Podcast!

That’s right – 100 episodes. A HUGE milestone, to be sure! We are so incredibly grateful for all the great guests we’ve had on over the past two years, and I want to be the first to tell you that we’re just getting started.

Now that we’re officially in the triple digits, we thought it might be nice for us to take a little step back and look out at the “State of the Union,” so to speak, for spirits and cocktails. A lot of things can happen in two years, and we think it’s really valuable to take that reflection time to look at what’s happened and where things are headed.

In this boozy State of the Cocktail Union interview, Eric is joined Modern Bar Cart Co-Founder Ethan Hall. Some of the things they discuss include:

Featured Cocktail: The Element Mojito

This episode’s featured cocktail is the Element Mojito. We’re absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Element [Shrub] to offer their full line of shrub concentrates on ModernBarCart.com. So I teamed up with Charlie Berkinshaw of Element [Shrub] to develop some really delicious batched cocktails using a full bottle of shrub, a full bottle of spirits, and our delicious Embitterment Bitters.

Last week, we introduced the Element Mule, featuring their ginger lime shrub, and this week, we bring you a fun, floral take on a classic mojito. To make the Element Mojito, you’ll need:

1 8oz bottle of Element Lemon Mint Shrub
1 full bottle of white rum (we used Lyon Distilling Company’s white rum)
1 bottle of Embitterment Lavender Bitters
The club soda or sparkling water of your choice

To make this large-format cocktail, combine the rum and shrub in a large pitcher with ice. In collins glasses, muddle fresh mint leaves, then fill with ice. Add 2-3 oz of the rum/shrub mixture, fill with your sparkling water, and float several dashes of Embitterment Lavender bitters right on top for a nice floral pop with each sip.

This is a really fun spin on a classic, and I love the fact that you still have a little wiggle room to customize it for your own preferences. This recipe makes 12-16 servings, which means it’s a no brainer if you’re hosting a Memorial Day or Fourth of July party this summer.

As a podcast host, I try my level best not to talk down to our listeners or oversimplify what our guests bring to the table for the sake of a sexy sound-byte.

What I’ve learned from creating a cocktail company, hosting 100 podcast episodes, and even judging international spirits competitions is that even the most tentative new home bartender has natural skills and knowledge that can lead to a fulfilling cocktail hobby, and even the most seasoned industry professional has room to learn and expand their perspective by questioning the status quo.

What we do at our best is provide a forum where novices and experts can all learn something and enjoy themselves, no matter what they bring to the table in terms of experience.
