What’s shakin, cocktail fans?

Welcome back to another episode of the Modern Bar Cart Podcast

Recently, we were able to get a little quality time with the globetrotting, MBA-earning co-founder of Modern Bar Cart, Ethan Hall. So we pulled up a mic and ran through some best-practices for getting your cocktail on when you’re not at home or at a nice cocktail bar.

This is essentially a cocktail MacGyvering episode where we run through some of the tools and tips that have effectively gotten us buzzed in suboptimal cocktailing situations

Featured Cocktail – The Daiquiri

Today’s featured cocktail is the Daiquiri, which is a classic, elegant, and simple cocktail traditionally made with white rum, and it’s an excellent little bit of relief from all this hot weather we’ve been having here on the East Coast.

To make one, you’ll need:

2 oz white rum
1 oz fresh lime juice
½ or ¾ oz simple syrup

Prepping this drink is rather simple. You just combine all of those ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice, give it a good, hard shake, and strain it into a stemmed cocktail glass. I like it in a coupe, but you can get away with anything that has a stem, and you get bonus points if you can find a way to pre-chill that glass in advance.One simple way to do that would be to fill the glass with water and ice maybe 5-10 minutes before you’re ready to make the cocktail, then discard the ice water before you strain your cocktail.

We’ve also got our own signature spin on the Daiquiri using our Typhoon Tiki Bitters by Embitterment. Adding just a dropperful of bitters adds a surprising amount of complexity to your daiquiri.

Tips for Plane and Train Cocktails

Purchase airplane bottles of liquor. According to the TSA at the time of recording, you’re allowed to pack bottles under 3 oz in your carry-on bag, as long as they can fit into a quart-sized sealed bag.
The Airplane Old Fashioned – Whiskey, 1 sugar packet, smuggled bitters, stir with a coffee stirrer in your plastic cup, bug the flight attendant for a garnish if you’re shameless.
The Shampoo Hack – Travel shampoo bottles are TSA compliant and a great way to take small amounts of a mixer with you on the road.

Ideas for a Mobile Bartending KIt

If you have time to prepare and room to pack more gear, consider using a portable lunchbox, cooler, tool box, or tackle box as your mobile bartending kit. Here are some of the items you may want to include:

Cocktail Shaker and Mixing Glass – But in a pinch, you can use two cups.
Bar Spoons – Because there’s just no substitute for a good bar spoon
Jiggers – In silicone or stainless steel if possible
Funnels – For tansferring batched cocktails to a bottle or flask
Towels – Because your hosts probably don’t want you using theirs
Paring Knife – For garnish prep
Waiter’s Corkscrew – For wine or corked bottles
Churchkey – For punching holes in cans or opening beers
Nut Milk Bag or Small Strainer – For easy-to-transport infusions
Channel Knife – With which you may create dazzling garnishes
Pour Spouts – For speed and ease of pouring
Small Cutting Board – Because it’s rude to use the counter

How to Permanently Relocate Your Home Bar

When you have to move, it’s decision time. What do you keep, and what do you leave behind? Although there is the added excitement of starting your home bar anew, there’s also the stress of the move. What’s a person to do?

Gift Unwanted Bottles to Friends – This is a great way for them to remember you every time they enjoy the bottle. If you have lots of bottles, hold a mock draft where your friends pick their favorites.
If It Comes in a Handle, You’ll Find It Anywhere – No need to take that Jim Beam with you when you move.
Tube Socks – These are a great way for you to cushion bottles when traveling or moving.
Pack a Milk Crate – Use your B-string clothes as wadding or cushioning for bottles that you pack in a milk crate.
Throw a “Empty the Bar” Party – This is almost certainly going to be interesting, and you can harness the power of a group to get rid of your collection.
