Trigger Warning

Hey, everybody, Eric here. Just wanted to slap a quick trigger warning on the beginning of this episode because, as you may have gleaned from the title, it contains a bit of cursing.

I know a lot of you are more excited for this episode sheerly because of that fact, which is good! It’s a great episode.

But for those of you who are turned off by the occasional F-bomb, I just want to say: we’ll miss you. Seriously – we’ll really fuckin’ miss you!

What’s shakin, cocktail fans?

Welcome back to another episode of the Modern Bar Cart Podcast!

You may be asking yourself, why the cursing? I thought this was a nice, polite podcast about yummy drinks! Why, pray tell, are you being such a potty-mouth?

Well, first of all – because it’s fun, and also, our interview guest this episode has found a way to incorporate a bit of irreverence into her cocktail blogging and recipe sharing.

Her name is Emily Farris, and she is the Kansas-City-based lifestyle blogger and instagrammer behind The Boozy Bungalow.

Featured Cocktail – The Horsefeather

This week’s featured cocktail is the Horsefeather. To make one, you’ll need:

2 to 3 ounces whiskey
4 oz cold ginger beer
Angostura bitters
Lime wedge

This is essentially a Moscow Mule made with Whiskey instead of vodka, and all you need to do to prepare it is combine all ingredients in a pint glass or a fancy metal mug with ice, give it a very quick stir, and enjoy.

If you think about what a “mule” cocktail is made of, you’ve got two REALLY strong ingredients – lime and ginger. These make a really refreshing combo, but they can also drown out certain more subtle characteristics of your base spirit. So, adding a few dashes of bitters can both cut down on the burn of the ginger and lime, and add a bit of complexity to a cocktail that’s usually praised for its refreshing qualities, not its depth.

Tips for Taking Great Cocktail Instagram Photos

Always try to take photos using natural light. Find a window. Dark cocktail photos are sad.
Try to steady your camera on something, even if you’re just using a smartphone (but if you’re at a bar using a pint glass, try not to drop it in the drink)!
Garnishes are key. A nice pop of green, yellow, or orange really makes the cocktail visually stimulating, not to mention that most garnishes actually serve an aromatic function in the cocktail.
